Typical sports fans of my age (old) usually have favorite teams that they root for. Those allegiances were usually formed by familiar bias or geographical location. But it usually took one particular set of players or a run of seasons to cement those die-hard bonds.
The 1999/2000 Portland Trail Blazers aren’t that team for me. Moving to the Northwest in the spring of 1989 as a 12-year-old means Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, and the 2-time Western Conference champion Blazers are, and saying otherwise would be dishonest.
What the 1999/2000 Blazers easily are is my favorite basketball team of all time.
They are being honored tonight at halftime in a quasi-25-year celebration, and although it doesn’t sound like everyone came back for various different reasons, it IS cool.
The boring take is that I can’t believe it has already been 25 years, and now we are all old.
Who cares?
Bonzi Wells schooling Kobe Bryant.
Scottie Pippen wanting to win as much or more than any other player I’ve watched play anything.
Sabas giving us what he had and breaking our hearts for knowing what could’ve been.
Rasheed Wallace being a way better teammate than anyone ever will give him credit for to this day.
Brian Grant and Stacey Augmon playing D like it meant something.
Coach Dunleavy wearing suits he didn’t buy in Portland.

All of it and a whole lot more.
