Oscars 2025

The Oscars are Sunday night and I’m less sure of what I think should win Best Picture this year then I’ve been in a long time.

I think four movies have a chance to win the big award tonight:

Anora

Conclave

A Complete Unknown

The Brutalist

I think Dune: Part Two is the best movie of the year and the movie that’ll be watched and rewatched the most of this year’s nominees ten years from now.

I also don’t think it has much chance to win best picture tonight.

Ive watched Anora twice and really enjoyed it both times. Mikey Madison will not win Best Actress tonight but she should. I don’t think Anora is the best picture of the year but it is the odds on favorite to win tonight and I won’t be upset with that result.

Conclave was a fun watch that was beautifully shot, acted and put together but the ending was awful in my opinion and not serious enough to be a Best Picture winner.

A Complete Unknown is a movie that feels like a traditional Best Picture winner as much or more than the other contenders. Timothee Chalamet’s performance as Bob Dylan might win him an Oscar for best actor (even though he is better in Dune: Part two). It is a fun watch but not the Best Picture of the year.

The Brutalist is the Best Picture of the year for me even if it isn’t exactly the American Movie epic it strives to be. For 3 1/2 hours it moves along fairly briskly and looks and sounds amazing. Adrien Brody holds your attention and Guy Pearce is going to get robbed of the best supporting actor award tonight. The score might be the best part of the movie and I’m excited to watch it again even after seeing it twice already.

The two biggest snubs of the Oscar season are Denis Villeneuve and Javier Bardem for their efforts in Dune: Part two.

Villeneuve’s achievements as a director in Dune: Part two are staggering and well worth a nomination if not a win.

Javier Bardem steals the movie from the beginning and gives a performance for the ages that’ll be honored as long as there are movies. He should have won the Best Supporting Actor award going away.
