Counting baseball games are still a little less then a month away.
Opening day for teams other than the dodgers and padres is still 5 weeks away.
But the baseball season unofficially began for my brother and I yesterday when we ripped our hobby boxes of 2025 Topps Series 1 baseball cards.
It might not be the most prestigious set released all year but it is the one we look forward to the most.
You don’t open it looking for big hits or a bunch of cards to send to PSA.
Chances are it won’t be worth the cardboard it is printed on for the most part.
But after a dark and wet winter on the Oregon Coast it is a rite of passage that signals brighter days and baseball on TV sooner than later.
Topps traditionally runs a design competition among its employees for the flagship design and the company’s roots in New York City probably made the choice at least this year kind of easy.
This year’s winning design is inspired by the subway maps you’ll find in New York City.

The base cards have the players name and position on the front as well as the team logo and team name up the side. Everything is easy to read on the front and the design leaves plenty of room for action shots.
The back of the cards are colorful if not a little cluttered and shorter on stats then I’d like to see on Topps’ flagship design.
The throwback to the 1990 Topps set are probably the most eye popping cards in the box even though I’m not particularly nostalgic for that set (give me the 1989 or 1991 set).
You are promised either an autograph or a relic card in every hobby box…my relic was a Kris Bryant Rockies card. Can’t win them all.

The “silver” pack might’ve been the only disappointing part of the box. I don’t think the mojo parallels look much like the 1990 set and my pack was terrible.

I’m sure we’ll end up opening some more and as usual I’m looking forward to how it translates to the chrome version but overall I’d say this year’s offering is a tad bit disappointing.
