Looping is a lot like high school in a lot of ways. We gossip like high school kids. We get upset at each other about nonsense like high school kids do. And the guys you start with tend to be your “classmates” for the reminder of your caddie career.

My favorite “classmate” from the summer of 2004 is an old looper named Nevin.

Nevin was a steel mill foreman in Indiana for almost 40 years. A lifelong golfer, he caddied at The Dunes Club in Michigan on the weekends for fun and playing privileges. When he retired from the Steel Mill Mr. Keiser sent him out to Bandon on a golf trip.

He didn’t go home to Indiana for 20 years.

We worked together a lot. Played a ton of golf together. Before his wife moved out from Indiana the only time he eat a good meal was at my house.

He moved back to Indiana the summer of 2019. His wife couldn’t take being away from their grandkids anymore.

I miss my friend but got to talk to him this morning and most of our conversations where about looping and caddies we both know…just like being in high school.
